ArenaNet and NCSoft collaborated to create Guild Wars 2, a massively multiplayer online role-playing game. The game is set in the fictional realm of Tyria and chronicles the re-emergence of Destiny’s Edge, a dissolved guild committed to battling the Elder Dragons. These Lovecraftian species have gained control of Tyria since the initial Guild Wars. The game is set in a persistent universe with a tale that unfolds in instances.
Guild Wars 2 claims to be the first game in the genre to have a plot that responds to player actions, typical in single-player RPGs but uncommon in multiplayer. Traditional questing is replaced by a dynamic event system that uses the ripple effect to allow players to approach missions in various ways as part of a permanent universe. However, the combat system attempts to be more dynamic than its predecessor by boosting synergy across professions and using the environment as a weapon, as well as simplifying the first game’s Magic-style skill system.
Guild Wars 2 is a successor to Guild Wars, and it retains the same absence of membership costs that set it apart from other commercially created online games at the time. However, payment was still necessary to install the game until August 2015. In its first two weeks, the game sold over two million copies. The most significant player concurrency has reached 460,000 by August 2013. The base game became free-to-play in August 2015, after over 5 million copies were sold.
