The Elder Scrolls Online is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) published by Bethesda Softworks and developed by ZeniMax Online Studios. It was launched in April 2014 for Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X. It’s a game from the Elder Scrolls franchise.
The game is situated on the continent of Tamriel and has a plot that is only loosely tied to the previous Elder Scrolls titles. Before its release in 2014, it had been under development for seven years. It garnered mixed reviews at first, but after being re-released and rebranded as The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited, critics praised the adjustments made.
The Elder Scrolls Online had a monthly membership that was required until March 2015, when it switched to a buy-to-play model with microtransactions and an optional subscription. The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited was rebranded and published in June 2015 for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One platforms. In June 2021, the game will be released for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and Series S. By 2020, the game will have sold over 15 million copies, with 2.5 million monthly active players in 2017.
